Escríbale a la Junta de BVSD →Our Latino community deserves a valid, well-designed, and timely process for sharing their voices BEFORE any changes are decided so all families can consider where their children will have a stable education where their school won’t change on them again in the near future. It’s the district’s responsibility to address the hiring issues by opening positions at the same time as neighboring districts. Dual-language schools aren’t the only ones struggling with hiring due to the district’s extremely delayed hiring timeline. THAT is something completely within their control. The Seal of Biliteracy issue is due to the district’s lack of education and system for educating families, educators, and students THROUGHOUT the bilingual pathway, not because the elementary dual-language programs are failing our mission. If the district wants more students to attain the Seal of Biliteracy, they need to diversify the course options in the Biliteracy pathway to provide classes that are more appropriate for native speakers at the secondary level. If they look at the data, they should consider how many of the students who attend dual-language elementary schools do NOT consider their bilingual education in secondary and ask those students and families why? For example, historically, most of the dominant-Spanish-speaking students who go to Centennial rather than bilingual programs at Casey or Manhattan say that they choose Centennial because they want to walk to school. So why not research and ask the Latino community if they would take advantage of bilingual opportunities at Centennial? Again, if this is something the district wants to improve, then the district has full control over the direction they can take. The dual-language elementary schools have NO control over this. Uni Hill is second in Boulder in terms of school population- just behind Foothills. Why would we even be a part of a conversation about enrollment issues?
