Flatirons Elementary has been an important part of this community for generations. Our children walking to school, parents gathering, and families becoming part of the neighborhood are what create the energy, connection, and sense of community that make Chautauqua so special. When we remove the neighborhood school, we risk pushing young families away. Over time, that means fewer children, fewer young parents, and less of the intergenerational vibrancy that keeps a neighborhood healthy and alive. Chautauqua should be a place where families can put down roots—not a neighborhood where young families feel they have to leave to find a community with a school. Children and young families bring energy, connection, and a sense of the future. They are essential to creating a vibrant, balanced, and sustainable neighborhood. Older generations bring history, wisdom, and stability; younger families and children bring renewal and continuity. We need both. Chautauqua is more than beautiful homes and historic streets. It is a living community. Flatirons Elementary is at the center of that community, and its loss would have consequences far beyond the school building itself. I strongly believe we need to consider not only the immediate financial or logistical reasons for closing the school, but also what this decision means for the long-term future and vitality of the Chautauqua neighborhood.
