This matters to me because the plan simply doesn’t make sense for Birch or for Broomfield. BVSD acknowledges that its enrollment projections are most reliable only about five years into the future, yet it is proposing a decision that could permanently eliminate a neighborhood school. Broomfield is continuing to grow and add housing, Birch’s recent kindergarten enrollment is already higher than the assumptions discussed in the projections, and BVSD acknowledges that family enrollment choices after consolidation are difficult to predict. Declining enrollment is a real challenge, but that alone doesn’t prove closing Birch is the right solution. Before making an irreversible decision, BVSD should demonstrate that the assumptions are sound and that closing Birch is actually the best long-term option for Broomfield.
