Escríbale a la Junta →The proposal to close the cherished neighborhood school, Douglass Elementary, which has been the heart of our community for decades is a shocking and highly unanticipated proposal. There has been no notification or planning process for this proposed closure per BVSD's Long Range Advisory Committee framework. to define which schools enter the declining-enrollment process: the Advisory phase (fewer than two classes per grade AND under 60% capacity) and the more severe Community Engagement phase (below ~1.5 classes and 50%). Douglass — at 67% capacity — never met the criteria and was never designated to either phase, in any year, including the current one; even the district's five-year projection charts (six schools in advisory, five in engagement) do not include Douglass. With an enrollment at 67% capacity Douglass was not flagged for being at or below the district's 60% threshold that triggers a review. Schools that were flagged have received what the framework promises: surveys, advisory teams of staff and parents, years of documented meetings, etc. The Douglass Elementary community received none of that, because the district's own system said it didn't need intervention. Douglass Elementary is a community asset based on the close proximity of families within walking, biking and easy bus access to the school. Our kids grew up with that strong sense of community that Douglass created and they formed friendships and bonds that will last their lifetime. The district’s planned relocation of elementary students from the local neighborhoods that Douglass serves including Paul Nor, Indian Peaks, Sombrero, Reserve, Fairview, Paragon, Ridgelea and many others to schools located miles away from those neighborhoods will not only up end these important community ties, but will in-turn create significant district-wide traffic and environmental impacts. The district’s sudden plan to instead relocate a “by lottery-only” charter school to this cherished neighborhood school will further exacerbate those county-wide impacts. This is clearly a rash decision by the school district that lacks critical input from the community members that the district serves. Closing Douglass Elementary School must be reconsidered which means board members must vote “NO” on the school district’s current proposal.
