Closing a high-performing school that is meeting enrollment/capacity expectations—and that families actively choose through open enrollment—makes very little sense. The strong demand for Douglass is evidence that the school is working and that families value what it provides. It is especially difficult to understand the decision to close Douglass only to move another open-enrollment school into the same building. If the building is still needed for students, why dismantle an established, successful school community to replace it with another one? Families have chosen Douglass for a reason. Students, teachers, staff, and families have built a thriving school community that deserves to be supported, not displaced. I strongly urge the district to reconsider this decision and keep Douglass open.
