Shutting down a school is no easy feat. It is not cheap. It is a massive disruption to the lives of the families who are impacted, both at the school that is shutting down and the school that is accepting students. Shutting down a school is not something that should be taken lightly and is not something that should be done unless absolutely necessary. The ONLY reason I accepted the pain of school consolidation was because the school district had the data to back up their position and the need for school consolidation and the benefits the students would get that would outweigh the pain. I see no benefits here as no studies have been done and what data is available seems to show that school closure should not even be considered in this case. So I am wholeheartedly against closing Douglass Elememtary. Do not put the families and students through the pain of school closure unnecessarily and without any studies done.
