Write to the Board →Our family has experienced firsthand what makes Douglass such a vital cornerstone for the Lafayette community and the surrounding communities whose children are enrolled there. In fact, one of our primary considerations for moving into the West Indian Peaks neighborhood in 2020 was knowing that our son (2 at the time) would have the opportunity to attend Douglass as his neighborhood school. We have been active in the Douglass community since our oldest son started his journey through kindergarten in 2023 and we’ve increased our involvement since our 2nd son (now 3) started in the Pre-K program with IEP support this year. We have witnessed firsthand how deeply invested the teachers, staff, and parent community are in fostering a supportive environment for all children attending Douglass. My oldest child is right in the middle of his elementary school years, and losing Douglass next year means losing continuity, familiar teachers, and many close-knit friendships that he’s built over the last 3+ years. Douglass currently serves a crucial role in supporting high-needs students, including housing the district’s Intensive Center for Affective Needs (ICAN) program. Uprooting these tailored resources and scattering the student body reflects a broader disruption to vulnerable families who depend on local educational continuity. The BVSD Board and Rob Anderson regularly speak to “improved” or “enhanced” learning experiences for ALL children in the district. So that begs the question - how does shipping all ICAN students to Heatherwood Elementary next year “enhance” or “improve” their learning experience? This proposed strategy is neither fair nor equitable. ICAN program students lose out by losing the opportunity to interact daily with a broad and diverse range of children not in that program. And children not in the ICAN program lose out by not getting the day to day interaction with children that have different needs and learning requirements than their own. Keep Douglass open and keep the community resources who support it intact! Vote NO on September 22nd!
