Write to the Board →I’m writing as a Boulder Valley parent to ask you to vote NO on the Resilient Schools Proposal on September 22, and specifically to keep Mesa Elementary open. I understand that enrollment has declined and that Mesa is operating below capacity. Those numbers are real. But capacity utilization is not the mission of a school district. Educating children is. Mesa is not a struggling school. It is one of the highest-performing elementary schools in Colorado. In the state’s 2025 performance data, Mesa students ranked in the 96th percentile in English, 98th percentile in math, and 99th percentile in science. It is difficult to understand why eliminating a school producing outcomes like these should be considered a responsible first-line solution to a capacity problem. The financial case deserves the same scrutiny. The entire Resilient Schools proposal is estimated to generate only $3.5–$4 million in annual savings, while requiring as much as $10 million in upfront facility modifications. I have yet to see a transparent, Mesa-specific calculation showing the net savings from closing Mesa after transition, facility, and transportation costs, or what happens if families leave BVSD rather than move to Bear Creek. Before permanently closing Mesa, the Board should be able to answer a simple question: What measurable educational or financial benefit is large enough to justify dismantling one of the best-performing schools in the state? If the answer is simply that Bear Creek has room and Mesa does not fill its building, that is not enough. BVSD itself says Mesa uses roughly half its capacity and that Bear Creek can accommodate the students. But the fact that students can physically fit somewhere else is not evidence that closing Mesa creates more value for those children. Please require the district to exhaust less destructive efficiencies, publish the Mesa-specific economics, and demonstrate that closing Mesa will actually improve educational outcomes before taking an irreversible step. You ran for this seat to exercise judgment on behalf of Boulder Valley families, not simply to optimize building utilization. Please vote NO on September 22 and keep Mesa open.
