Write to the Board →My daughter and son-in-law plan to send my grandson to Flatirons Elementary School, and I want him to be able to attend school in his own neighborhood. As a member of the Flatirons community, there are so many reasons why it makes sense for him to attend this school. Of course, there is the convenience of it all, but there's also the opportunity for him and his parents to experience a stronger bond in their immediate community, with this school being a central focus of their lives. It also enables him to walk or ride his bike to school, which saves on gas, time and less emissions from cars, which fits well into the culture of our entire community. Closing the school will be a big step toward more breakdown in this neighborhood. Just walk the streets there and witness the number of homes being rented to CU students (and being poorly maintained), how the students' automobiles line the streets creating parking challenges, and their trash and recyclables littering the yards and alleys. This alone is a big part of the problem; that landlords can stuff as many students into their properties as they can, and make a ton of money while preventing young families from purchasing homes in the neighborhood as their primary residence. The BVSD plan to close schools in our community needs to return to the drawing board as I believe the current position of the board has not been developed thoroughly enough. This is too big of a decision for anything less than complete due diligence and considering all options for today and all future generations.
