Write to the Board →BVSD is doing poorly with bilingual education. What begins as a program, in only two elementary schools in the district, peeters to nothing in high school. It is unacceptable that the district, following a taxpayer-funded study of the bilingual schools' programs and pathways, has done nothing to address the feedback and direct asks identified by the study's participants. Now Uni Hill is in the crosshairs, with an appalling lack of support for bilingual programming. Create uncertainty so Latino families don't send their children to Uni Hill, causing enrollment by that population to decline, and therefore sandbagging the data to favor the predetermined (and weak) data point of 'declining enrollment' to close a school. Is this how we define education in BVSD? Where is your commitment to students of all races and ethnic backgrounds? Where is you curiosity about the prowess of bilingualism in our community? Why would you not take the opposite approach and double down on support for bilingual education, by expanding the program in elementary schools and extending this same program commitment to the middle and high schools? These questions, over years, are unanswered and that poorly reflects on the BVSD School Board and BVSD decision makers turning a deaf ear to and ignorant mind on bilingual education. Now is your time to right that poor showing, and show up to learn and invest in the children in this community with a strong bilingual program that spans preK through 12th grade.
