Write to the Board →Pause until there is a full, comprehensive plan for the entire district that takes into account Middle School pathways and the future of Dual Language schools - or, better yet, create and be transparent about a more comprehensive plan. Do not prioritize a focus school over a community school with a high performing SPED program, and please be sure that experts in supporting students with intensive emotional, behavioral and social-emotional challenges would agree to students being in an open-concept building compared to what they have at Douglass (and to such students no longer being a part of their own school community). I'd also add that my elementary school closed when I was in 6th grade - it was a cherished school, and parents and teachers did so much to help us as children honor the school (e.g., create songs about the school) - all to keep the memories alive. I don't recall it being a battle with the district - it was understandable why it had to close. My guess is the transparency and trust was there. We need that for students at Douglass and elsewhere too.
