Email BVSD Board →Strongly oppose the closure of Flatirons Elementary School. Flatirons is much more than a school—it is the heart of the Chautauqua neighborhood and an important part of what makes this community vibrant, connected, and welcoming to families. For generations, the school has brought children, parents, teachers, and neighbors together and has helped create a true sense of community. As someone who has lived in the Chautauqua neighborhood for decades, I have seen firsthand how important young families and children are to maintaining the energy and vitality of this extraordinary neighborhood. Closing the school risks making the neighborhood less accessible and less attractive to young families, fundamentally changing the character and long-term vitality of the community. A healthy neighborhood needs children. It needs families walking to school, parents connecting with one another, and children growing up together in the place they call home. Once that community infrastructure is lost, it is extremely difficult to recreate. I urge the district to look beyond the immediate financial considerations and carefully consider the long-term social, educational, and community impact of closing Flatirons Elementary. Please keep this neighborhood school open and preserve an institution that has served as a vital anchor for the Chautauqua community for generations.
